It should be noted at the very beginning that no catalog of Joseph Haydn's works exists to date that offers both a systematic and a chronological order of his immense output according to strictly scientific criteria.

Even Anthony van Hoboken's catalog, which was compiled in 1957 and is still valid today, is, to put it simply, an attempt to transfer his collection of early and first editions of Haydn's works to a classification system that did not exist before and which he had to develop specifically for this purpose. The fact that this eventually became a ‘Thematic Catalogue of Works’ is probably thanks to a colleague who is still unknown today. It is correspondingly inadequate.

This rudimentary catalog of works - revised by Michael Fendre - is based on the scientific findings of the Joseph Haydn Institute in Köln, which were compiled under the direction of Jens Peter Larsen, later Georg Feder and finally Armin Raab. Nevertheless, the Hoboken order was never fundamentally abandoned.

It should be noted at this point that the International Joseph Haydn Private Foundation is already working on a new, comprehensive catalogue of Joseph Haydn's works in collaboration with the Centre for Digital Music Documentation (CDMD) of the Academy of Sciences and Literature | Mainz under the project management of Michael Fendre - the Digital Catalog of the Works of Joseph Haydn (HDC), which will be arranged systematically and chronologically.
